I antologin Ignorance Between Knowing and Not Knowing har Sandström tillsammans med Gavin Morrison undersökt just okunskapen som metod för både konstnärliga processer och från betraktarperspektiv.

Hon studerade vid Cooper Union School of Art i New York, Academie Minerva i Groningen i Nederländerna (magisterexamen 1997), Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2000) och fick sin masterexamen från Yale University år 2001. Sigrid Sandström constantly and playfully searches for new expressions of knowledge through artistic processes. She works with chance processes and imprints as a method for letting matter find its own way, unknown to the reasoning mind. In this way, Sandström deliberately lets ignorance become an active element in the creation of the image. By delimiting certain parts and letting loose chance within certain limits, Sandström oscillates between control and free play. The works have an air of dynamics and wild speed. Despite this play of forces, there is a factual foundation present, controlled and collected. Sandström is interested in differences between words like “look”, “see” and “view”. There are different kinds of processes and different kinds of knowledge. To “see” is a conscious activity. Sandström refers to the word “project”; its Latin meaning,
proicere, means to “throw forth”. It can mean that you project an inner state, a desire or an unconscious feeling.
In the anthology Ignorance Between Knowing and Not Knowing, Sandström and Gavin Morrison have worked together to study ignorance as a method both for artistic processes and from a viewer’s perspective.
