Torsby Finnskogscentrum

Torsby Finnish Settlement Centre

Open during summer

A visitors’ centre and meeting place focusing on the Finnishsettlers’ cultural heritage. You can experience a unique piece of Nordic history and the destiniesof these people. Through our exhibitions and activities we shed light upon the heritage left by the Finnish settlers and others who have lived here in the vast Nordic forests.

We receive you in the middle of the forest where the Finnish settlers with cut and burn farming made their homes.

We can guide you to authentic sites in the forest, where you can come close to the cut and burn Finnish settlers who came here in the 17th century. In Torsby rural district there are about 30 well preserved smoke-houses, ten in intact condition and in their original sites. In the same forest landscape there are traces of Second World War refugees and places where ”the travelling people” could settle without fear of reprisals.

The centre is run in co-operation with Torsby Kommun.
